Start Reading

With the no child left behind act in place, it is important for parents to take a more active role in the education of their children. We just need to accept that teachers arent going to be able to teach our children everything they need to know with these new policies in place. If you are a parent of a child entering kindergarten you can help your child and the teacher out by giving them a firm foundation in reading.

Start by creating an atmosphere of reading in your house. You need to read. Read for your own enjoyment, and read to you child. Have books around for you child to look through and handle. Its this early exposure to literature that prepares them for the world of reading. With books around them, children will be naturally interested and curious about them, and what they have to offer. Point out words and letters in the environment.

Help them to learn to write by appreciating their scribbles. Let them explore with writing, dont make them write the letter A 10 times to get the form right, they will correct their form through practice. Also dont use reading as a punishment, or a forced activity. They will take to it naturally, if you try to force it on them, you will just turn them off to it.

Go to the library with your child. Let them pick out books, and get excited about it. Picking out books should be thrilling for them. Most libraries have programs that are geared towards getting little ones into reading. Try dropping in for story time. It is fun, social, and it will give your voice a break.

The most important thing you can do for your childs education is to take an interest in it. Help them to explore our world, and be there to answer any questions they have. As a parent, you are their greatest teacher.
